How NOT to prepare for a high school reunion

This past weekend I attended my 25th high school reunion. What’s that you say? I must have graduated high school at age 5? Well, you’re right!  Not only that, but I skipped the fourth grade so I am REALLY young! Tee hee hee.  But anyway, despite my only being 30 at my 25th reunion, it was loads of fun!  It’s remarkable how so many people have changed and yet when you look at them you can still see them as they were in high school. Or is that the beer goggles talking? Not sure.

I was pretty nervous going to the reunion because I was concerned my memory would fail me. Which it did.  Regardless, I’ve learned a few things at each reunion.  I’ve learned what NOT to do.  For your edification, here are my top ten things what NOT to do at a class reunion.

  1.  Do not wait until the last minute to decide to attend. Then you’ll hafta scramble to get a hotel room. And buy a cheaper ticket.
  2. Do not forget to pack deodorant.  Self explanatory.
  3. Do not forget to get a great outfit.  Something sparkly maybe.
  4. When looking at your yearbook, do not focus solely on the people you know or were friends with. Of course, you’ll recognize them. Focus on the people you didn’t know so you’ll recognize them when you get there.
  5. Don’t be surprised if people still act the way they did 25 years ago (cool kids still stick together, etc).
  6. Do not say “who the hell are you?” when people approach you to say hello. I’m just saying.
  7. If you run out of pleasantries to say ask about their kids or pets. Always works. Except of course, for those two guys who aren’t married and dont have pets. But…anyway.
  8. Don’t forget to bring pictures of your kids.  Telling people that your kids look like you but shorter, isn’t a great description.
  9. When people tell you who they are, smile and say “oh you look the same!” even if they don’t. cuz it makes them feel good.
  10. 10.  Don’t forget to tip the bartender, because after the 3rd screwdriver, he remembered your face.

And the bonus tip is: don’t be afraid to let go and have some fun!  Here is one of me being reunited with my singing group.  Whaddayathink?
