So number 1 son graduates this Friday. As you may know, I am having a hard time thinking that my little boy is old enough to graduate from high school. It was just yesterday that I brought him home from the hospital. Given this emotional turmoil I’m in, it’s been difficult to get excited and plan for the graduation events. But I’ve been doing it sporadically. He didn’t want a big party, and after I threw my own graduation party last year at home, I swore I wouldn’t do it again because it was SO much work. But yet, here I am, hosting a home party. To be sure, my home is not that big. The Man complains that it is too small to host big parties (or any, for that matter), but it is my feeling that people don’t really care how big your house is; all they wanna do is love on you a bit. So that’s my theory. Anyway.
To make graduation prep worse, we have a lot of things going on: doctor’s appointments, prep for vacation, and I have a pinched nerve, something I have had to deal with periodically since my car accident nearly 10 years ago. So cleaning will be tough for me this week, but I’m SURE number 1 son and pumpkin will pick up the slack! Prolly get Man to help too since him is so big and strong and can move things.
So I said I wasn’t doing a big party, but whatever. I’m having it catered and here’s what’s scheduled to be on the menu:
- Made to order omelets
- A fruit bowl with yogurt dressing
- Roasted red bliss potatoes with garlic and rosemary
- Cold pasta salad with sundried tomatoes
- Cold grilled chicken breast mustard vin
- Fresh salsa and guacamole
I’m thinking I’ll also offer mimosas, coffee, and a non alcoholic drink, although not sure what. I’m open to suggestions. I’m also trying to figure out what to do about the cake. We’re not the traditional type of family so a good luck graduate cake or something doesn’t seem fitting. So, I’m open for suggestions with that too! I’d also like a floral table centerpiece but I’m not sure if there will be room.
Anyone have any suggestions? What have you done for graduation parties, I’d love to know!

I can’t be much help
My grad party was outdoors, by a lake, with a super huge cake, Have you thought about getting a cheesecake? or something like that. I know some people like cookie cakes as well.
Jamie´s last [type] ..Oh, I was supposed to close that?
Pam,
I’m a few years away from my daughter’s graduation so I’m going to live vicariously through you. I LOVE the fact that you’re catering. My family would think me uppity (although I’d take the label with pride – LOL).
I should tell you that if I were invited, I would drink mimosas until you cut me off. But, for those who don’t indulge, I make a punch that consists of rainbow sherbert, 7up and ice. It gets rave reviews.
Have fun!
i have been called uppity before and i just dont give a damn. my world is about what’s easy for me. and besides, i dont like potlucks: you dont know what those people’s kitchens are like!
you and i can sit and drink mimosas until it’s all gone. then we’ll send the Man out to get more. your punch sounds yummy, but also sounds like work, which i dont want to do. did i mention the pinched nerve????
oooh cookies sound like a neeat idea, though!
thanks!
Never had a graduation party but I wish you good luck! I planned a birthday party this year but since it was for a 1 year old, who didn’t really have much of an opinion except for MORE cake it was not hard.
I don’t envy you, I am such a disorganized, procrastinator that I am sure a big party would all fall apart in my face. Again, good luck
The menu sounds yummy! My high school graduation party was supposed to be huge with 80+ guests, and then the day of the thing half of my mom’s side of the family called and said they weren’t coming. Jerks. We had fun anyway and there was a fantastic “leftovers party” the next day. Not to mention the rest of the week.
The cookie idea sounds neat. Maybe decorated in his school colors or his initials.
