So I’ve been doing some research about women’s hair loss. In fact, I’m constantly looking up information on the Googles about hair loss. Constantly. Ok so I’ve learned that there are many different types of hair loss and blah blah medical terms for hair loss. There are many reasons for hair loss: polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid problems, anemia, malnutrition, surgery, childbirth, stress/traumatic event, certain medications, hormone fluctuations, etc. There seem to be many reasons why we can lose our hair. This scares me because what this means is they don’t know for sure. And worst of all, they don’t know what to do about it which is NOT what I want to hear.
I’ve been reading a book by Mary Shomon called Living Well with Hypothryoidism, which I think I blogged about when I was ordering the book. Yes I’m still on the thyroid kick until proven otherwise. Anyway, Shomon says that hypothyroidism and the adrenal glands have to do with hormones (among other things) and could certainly affect hair loss (coupled with memory issues makes me oh so grumpy frequently). So I wait until I see the endocrinologist to see what he has to say. Meanwhile I’m eating healthy in the hopes that this improvement will help. All the books I’ve been reading about vegetarianism, veganism, and raw food (ism?) say that enzymes and nutrients are lost in processed food which in turn, do not nourish the body. So perhaps I’m on the right track.
I found a website called the Women’s Hair Loss Project, found here: http://community.womenshairlossproject.com/home.php that I somehow had overlooked in all my previous searches. The neat thing about this site is that it offers plenty of resources for researching hair loss, such as comparing the dermatologist to the endocrinologist in terms of how they can help hair loss. The article is here: http://www.womenshairlossproject.com/hair-loss/endocrinologist-dermatologist-hair-loss-doctor/ and I found it to be really enlightening in that it seems like to get any real help I will have to see several docs (like I’m doing) to get some results. The hair loss project also offers a place to blog and a discussion forum. While I usually shy away from these types of things, on a whim I checked it out. These women are experiencing various phases of hair loss and are very supportive. It’s been great. I’m amazed at how they can relate to me in ways that no one else can (except of course, my friend who lost her hair to chemo/Hodgkins. She’s a champ.). Of course, my hair loss isn’t anywhere near as comprehensive as hers so I feel weird for complaining. But at least she knows why. That’s a big one for me. Why am I losing my hair? Not why me, but just why? And why am I losing my memory? I need to find answers to these questions.
I’m reading a book called The Cure is in the Cause by someone who’s a naturopathic doctor or something. It’s pretty interesting. Not sure I buy into all of what the author says but it sure makes you think about all the processed foods and chemicals in our food and how they could possibly be related to our modern health issues. But her theories do agree with my thoughts that if I can find out WHY I’m losing my hair (and my memory) then maybe I can do something about it, no?
I hope so.
