Day Three–Thursday

Thursday morning came similar to Weds. Awake off and on during the night, waking up early and then dozing until breakfast. By Thursday’s breakfast I realized an awful truth: hospital food is horrible! Wednesday’s meals I overlooked because #1 the vegetable lasagna (recommended by nurse jane) was tasty and #2 I thought I would appreciate any meal I didn’t have to prepare myself. Boy was I mistaken! By Thursday I realized that the hospital food was not very tasty (see pic). I was looking forward to the eggs and toast and coffee I had ordered but was disappointed with its taste. I didn’t eat much of it and I wasn’t sure whether it was because I didn’t have much of an appetite or because of the quality. As the morning wore on I learned the hospital routine: breakfast early, meds, doctor’s rounds, washing up, and then visiting hours around 11am. I also discovered another awful truth. I still wasn’t passing ANY gas at all which meant I couldn’t go home. ARGH. That’s when we kicked everything into high gear. My mom was on her way across the state to help out and I didn’t want to not be at home for that. Plus the kids were emotionally needing me at home and I’ll admit I was too. So I started ingesting anything I could get my hands on that I thought might make me pass gas. I had DH get me coffee from the cafeteria; I sent him for a bean burrito from Taco Bell (almost threw up, but no gas) and tried to eat all the veggies I could find. Still no luck.

By dinnertime it was obvious that I wasn’t going to pass any gas nor was I going home. But nurse jane, ever the optimist, kept my hopes up! A couple hours after dinner DH, the kids, and the parents were in my room visiting me. I knew then that I wasn’t going home that night. Oh well, I had pretty much resigned myself to another night of no sleep and weird noises. And so it was. Despite the irregularity of the night, I did manage to eek out a small surprise; I passed gas, Woo hoo! At approximately 12:20am I managed the small feat which happened to coincide with the administration of pan meds, so I was able to tell nurse mike and get it written down on my records. The night (and the gas) improved steadily throughout. By morning I was excited because I knew for sure that I was going home.
